The Dragonfly and the story behind the logo“Dragonflies are reminders that we are light/and we can reflect light in powerful ways if we choose to do so.” – Robyn Nola
The totem of the dragonfly holds the insights of adaptability and transformation, exhibiting the wisdom of evolving and adapting to our life’s potential. They are spiritual creatures connected to light and change. The dragonfly with its 360 degree clear vision is a symbol of awareness and the ability to recognize one’s emotions and feelings. Dragonflies take on the role of spiritual guides for us. They are powerful yet graceful – even in high wind. They show us how to navigate life’s storms with confidence and ease. They motivate us to let go of whatever holds us down or holds us back. They are also strongly associated with water because they begin their lives in ponds and small bodies of water. They learn to scurry across water surfaces, a strong symbol of looking beyond the surface of a person or situation. Life is complex and as creatures of both air and water. While the dragonfly looks ahead with its clear and perfect vision, it lives in the present and appreciates what is in front of it. The goal is to live life to the fullest and not taking anything for granted.Change is something that you may have to embrace to reach your full potential. As a symbol of metamorphosis and transformation, it inspires those who have it as a totem to bring about the changes needed in their lives. It takes a lot of strength for the dragonfly to come out from its larval stage. It’s also the time where it is most vulnerable. And for any human, it takes self-realization (wisdom) to accept that embracing change is the only way to achieve growth. The water is a symbol of the unconscious and one has to be reminded of its presence. The dragonfly spirit can help you explore and become self-aware.
Dragonfly Symbolism 1: Change and New Beginnings The dragonfly molts several times throughout its life, and each time it starts a new chapter of its life. Dragonflies are a common symbol for change and accepting new beginnings and new opportunities. Dragonfly Symbolism 2: Living Life to the Fullest Dragonflies spend most of their lives as nymphs below the water's surface, and only exist as the beautiful dragonfly that we know and love for around six months maximum. Contrarily, they can live as nymphs for up to four years, and they can molt anywhere from 8-17 times. Because the dragonfly is only in its final form for a few months, they're a symbol of living in the moment and taking advantage of the short time given. Dragonfly Symbolism 3: Maturity The dragonfly as we know is actually the creature's last stage of its life. As such, the dragonfly is a symbol of growth, maturity, and wisdom that one would achieve after living fully and gaining life experience. Dragonfly Symbolism 4: Poise Dragonflies are powerful and graceful flyers. They flap their wings only about 30 times per minute, and have about 20 times more strength in their wings than other insects. They are expert flyers and are noted for both strength and beauty. Common Interpretations of Dragonfly Meanings Dragonflies in Dreams If you dream about a dragonfly, it may indicate a few things. One common interpretation is that a transformation of some kind is coming. On the other hand, a dragonfly that crosses your path or is otherwise out of reach, may signify that you're insecure about something in your life and need to work hard to experience growth. If you're attacked by a dragonfly in your dream, it may indicate that someone close to you has hurt you, or that you have hurt someone close to you. Since they symbolize maturity, poise, and grace, being attacked or stung is a particularly personal attack and represents that in life as well. Dragonflies in Life If you come across a dragonfly in life, it can serve as a reminder to live life to the fullest and appreciate every moment. Dragonflies can also symbolize that you're ready for a change in your life, and they can be a great initiative to get started. If you see two dragonflies together, it can serve as a confirmation that you're in a mature relationship that is one of a kind. It may also signify that this kind of relationship is lies ahead in your future. Dragonfly legends The Zuni, a Native America Pueblo tribe, say that long ago, there was a food shortage on their land. The people moved on, accidentally leaving behind a little boy and girl. The boy made a creature out of corn and grass, and through their imaginations and love for the creature, it came to life. The creature was meant to go to the gods to plead on behalf of the Zuni people so they could have a harvest, but when the girl became ill, the creature went to the corn maidens, sacred beings who are associated with corn and the giving of life, to ask for food. The corn maidens agreed and told the children that the gods had special plans for them. The corn re-grew and the tribe returned to their land. They made the boy and girl leaders of the tribe, who then made a companion for the creature that saved them. The creature asked to be called "dragonfly." The dragonfly is often used as part of sacred Zuni objects to symbolize health, rain, summer, and harvest. In Japan, Dragonflies are a much loved and revered creature, often appearing in art and poetry. The legend goes that long ago, a young emperor was out in the forest and was attacked by a dangerous insect. A dragonfly appeared and ate the insect, thus protecting the emperor from harm. Dragonflies are thought to be invincible in Japan, and some myths indicate that the legendary Samurai warriors was the symbol of power, agility, and victory, putting them on their armor or carried dragonfly totems into battle. In China, dragonflies are symbols of prosperity, harmony, and good luck. Native Americans consider it a sign of happiness. It is from the Greeks that they get their root name, Odanates, which means tooth. Because of the way dragonflies crush prey, it was once believed they possessed teeth. The more modern name of the dragonfly comes from the myth that they once were dragons. In general, most cultures view the dragonfly in a very positive way. It’s a symbol of change, adaptability, transformation, and rebirth. Legend has it that the dragonfly was once a dragon full of wisdom. It flew through the night bringing light with its fiery breath. The dragon was challenged to prove its power by changing its form into a small dragonfly. In accepting the challenge to prove its magical prowess, the dragon lost all its powers unable to transform back into its fearsome self. The dragonfly symbolizes transformation and the embodiment of wisdom and enlightenment. Is The Dragonfly Your Spirit Animal? What is an animal spirit? It is associated with the native American Indian belief in animism that this came to be. A belief in the spiritual idea that the universe and all the natural objects inside of it have souls or spirits. And an animal spirit is believed to be a supernatural power. One that conveys influence and empowering a person with the trait of the animal. The animal spirit is also regarded as a guide who might appear in dreams in the form of an animal. An animal spirit guides you and shows you the wisdom to navigate through life. It teaches you and in some instances will even protect you. Your Spiritual AnimalIf your personal spirit animal is a dragonfly, you’re likely to be highly adaptable and quick thinking. New people, places, and situations are easy – it’s where you shine. Maturity and presence are words often used to describe them. Dragonfly people will also likely experience many evolutions and metamorphoses throughout life. The experience of change is part of their soul’s journey. These people, when tapped into their highest vibration and purpose, have the ability to soar to great heights in this lifetime. The journey of a dragonfly is charted from 3 realms of life, water, land, and air. As a nymph, it spends most of its life surviving the harsh and dangerous environment where it is not on top of the food chain. And the adaptability it learns early on and its instinct to survive, carry it through the land to close a chapter in its fragile life and begin another. And finally, it comes out of its old shell to emerge as a full-fledge flyer completes its transformation. The eyes of the dragonfly uses 80% of its brainpower. It needs to have a strong vision to survive and thrive. The ability to always know what is happening in its environment gives it the advantage to defend or attack whatever the situation calls for. Those same eyes symbolize the clear awareness, clarity of the mind, and the ability to see and conscious of the limitations of the human self. Dragonflies can be a symbol of ourselves that reach wisdom and maturity. The same vision symbolizes a clear direction without being distracted or even blind-sided. Soon, reaching our destination becomes much easier, and our ability to adapt along the way develops our skills and wisdom.
